I am raising money for research to help cure cancer.

July last year my friend Niki Van Delft died having fought a brutal fight against cancer. The diagnosis came suddenly. I still vividly remember where I was when I learned the news. It was a September, it was mild out. I was walking home, and the message group me and some buddies used to joke around on after a recent holiday in Lisbon had an unread message from Niki. ‘Hello amigos!’ he said. ‘I am in the intensive care at the moment and everything looks like I will have cancer’. They have found spots on my longs, me Johnson and lymph’. He had just heard the scariest news of his life and he was still joking around. Friends from across Europe arranged to come see him in hospital immediately.

The next day, seeing him in his condition was a complete shock. Niki and his mum Ingrid had been over at my flat just days before. He had flown her out for a trip to London to make her feel better after her cat died, and the photos he showed me from their trip showed that they had been everywhere! That’s just the kind of guy he was, pulling through for friends and loved ones when they needed it. Thinking back to their visit, in hindsight, you could see that he had lost a lot of weight, but he had also recently been running with a group he joined in Amsterdam. It was easily overlooked.

That afternoon in Den Bosch hospital, I saw the same friend I knew from our studies and crazy trips abroad, but differences in his appearance were impossible to mentally reconcile. He was sitting upright in his bed, tubes and instruments sticking out of him, and with a surprised look on his face because all his friends had come to see him. In reality we shouldn’t have been there. His breathing was laboured at that stage and he needed to rest. Nevertheless, I think he loved that we came to see him, and I hope it helped him through what would be months of the most difficult journey anyone could take. He was so afraid, and he showed so much gratitude.

To tell you the truth, I've been putting this off. Thinking about what happened has been too painful, but I’ve got to let these terrible feelings come back to the surface to pay tribute to my friend. Working through that brings great memories back as well. I remember Niki and I working in the Reims library using a dictionary to figure out the meaning of a class assignment word by word because neither of us had enough French between us to cross the street properly let alone write an economics paper. I remember legendary parties and insane nights out in distant places. I remember us talking about our futures, and non-specific but nevertheless fantastic sounding summers when our future selves could crack open a beer by a pool somewhere with our future families and watch our future kids make all the same mistakes we made.

Niki was so much more to all of us than just a friend. He brought people together who would have otherwise led separate lives. We all love him, and we miss him, but we can’t bring him back. That hurts to admit but keeping his legacy alive means taking a leaf out of his book and doing something about it with people you care about.

In June, a group of Niki’s friends will cycle the Alpe d’Huez in support of cancer research. Each of us has a goal of raising €2,500, and all the money raised will go directly to funding scientific research into cancer. I thought about putting this all in a video, but even writing this right now is difficult enough. I hope that someday enough breakthroughs in cancer detection and treatment will be made that nobody ever has to go through what Niki went through again. You can pay tribute to Niki’s life by donating here, and by making sure to use the resources out there to help detect and reduce cancer likelihood for yourself and for your loved ones. You can also pay tribute by doing what Niki did every day, by living your life with intention. Thank you.

Sorry to hear the news about Niki - I only met him once, but he left an impression, that seemed to be the type of person he was. I knew he was a good friend to you and though I didn't know him well, after reading the background I can barely believe that he's gone. Good luck with the fundraising and with the cycling, I know you will all help make a difference.
