Waarom ik meedoe aan Alpe d'HuZes
This year, we will participate in the Alpe d’Huzes with Harm’s family. We left The Netherlands knowing that something could happen while we were away. Unfortunately, we were shortly confronted with the disadvantages of moving overseas. We had to say goodbye to his Uncle Bouke and Grandpa Gerrit shortly after we left. Luckily, we could say goodbye over the phone and were brought to tears when we spoke to Bouke in his last hours. He told us that he was proud of what we had accomplished together and that he was sure that we were a great fit. Because “you are both never giving up, and those people stick together. You are a good team”.
I also lost an aunt and an uncle a few years ago. Luckily, we still have our memories to remember them. I still remember baking pizzas with my Aunt Jacky in their garden or my Uncle Toon, who encouraged me to sing songs for Santa Claus during our family ski trip. During this ski trip, Jacky took every opportunity to request ‘Where is the Love’ from Black Eyed Peace. For me, this song is about remembering to be kind to each other because you never know what someone is going through. Every time this song is played, it reminds me of how we danced in the (probably relatively small) après ski bar.
You might be wondering what these people have in common. Unfortunately, all these superhumans were suffering from cancer and did not win the battle. But in their honour, we will challenge ourselves to climb the Alpe d’Huez and raise money to help other families better prepare for their battle. Because we will not give up.
