Alpe d'HuZes 2025

Why I participate in Alpe d'HuZes?

Tomorrow I’m joining some colleagues to do a brutal cycle in aid of cancer research.

My ask?

  • 1 - register as a stem cell donor. 🧬
  • 2 - spare some spondoolies for the cause. 💰

The event: 🚵‍♂️

Alpe d'HuZes is a unique sporting event where as much money as possible is raised for cancer research and for improving the quality of life of people with cancer.

On a single day, 5000 participants will bike, hike or run the Alpe d'Huez. Attempting a maximum of six climbs, under the motto 'giving up is not an option'.💪

Is it tough? 😵🔥

Yes. Very. I did it in 2019 and managed 3 climbs. Each climb comprises a 14km road cycle at av 8.1% grad (max 14%) accumulating 1.1km vert and 21 hairpins. It should take 90-120mins per attempt and burn a lot of cals. I’ve trained hard and aiming for 4-5 climbs this year. The cut off is 20:00. 🔋🪫

My “brother’s” Cancer Story?  🥹🥰

It’s ongoing but looking good thanks to incredible advances supported by charities and NHS and super talented teams of people who work tirelessly with purpose and skill and care to save lives.

In January John went into ER with suspected pneumonia. A blood test revealed blood cancer. During the next hours and days a team assembled from around the region to clean his blood and deal with the heart attacks and shock to his body and brain. He made it through and ensued several rounds of chemotherapy before they decided he required a stem cell transplant.

No perfect match could be found on the register - IF YOU CAN, GET ON THE REGISTER. IT’S EASY, GLOBAL REACH AND SAVES PEOPLE. IT COULD SAVE A LOVED ONE.

Luckily I was a partial match for John and the advances in technology made it possible to use my cells with similar success rates to 100% match. Wow. John was given the choice of 30% chance of survival on chemo, 70% chance with stem cell transplant. It was a scary reality.

In April, John received a massive dose of chemo aimed at killing his own immune system. John’s body looked ravaged. An old man in a week. It was savage. They made the transplant once he had taken his immunity to zero.

4 weeks of isolation later and his body has accepted the new stem cells and he is on the road to recovery. He has to stay in a flat by the hospital (an hour from home) for when he has a sniffle. Sniffles can kill right now, and are treated as emergencies. All the treatment is painful but the knitting needles in his veins deliver the medicine.

His wife and kids visit when they can, but it is tough on all of them. He is on a path with many forks taking a day at a time towards recovery. His heart and mind are strong. 6 months post transplant is the next target.
